19 Jul A Church in Mudgee: A Marriage of the Old and New
Perhaps one of the reasons why I love being at home is the gem situated in a private corner of Harrowfield Homestead – A Church in Mudgee.
I remember how it felt like the first time I saw it. You know the feeling when you’re just a few steps away from home after a long time of being away? Your steps get quicker, eager to see that old, familiar place, smell the scent of the things you grew up with? That’s how I felt. It was home.
Everything is so well-laid out. It is spacious but cosy. Its charm, I guess, lies in its quaint and simple appearance. It’s perfect for those romantic getaways with the one you love or even as a quiet haven where you can enjoy some time for yourself.
The History of A Church in Mudgee
Step inside and you’ll get that feeling of love and peace that seems to envelop you. And I loved it, even more, when I learned of its history, which I am going to share with you.
Seventy-nine years ago, a Catholic church was built in Apple Tree Flat by Monsignor Flanagan, so parishioners can attend mass without traveling to Mudgee. It was named St. James as a tribute to Father James Dunphy, a young reverend, who drowned in the Mudgee River. History has it that he was on his way back to Bathurst after performing his pastoral duties when the fateful event happened.
Years after, the Church was moved to Harrowfield and was used as a workshop.
Since then, it was remodeled and operated as a guesthouse.
What’s it like to stay at the church?
Here’s what one of our satisfied customers said:
What a fabulous little place this farm is! It has the feel of rustic farm stay and yet the interiors and the amenities will make you feel at home. My favourite stay in Mudgee by far! The kitchen is fully equipped with oven, microwave and dishwasher. Did I mention the Nespresso machine?! That was such a luxury for a farm stay! The bathroom is super clean and spacious. Living room is connected to the bedroom but separated partially by a wall, which was perfect for us as we had our dog with us. Initially I was concerned about the warmth of the place given we are going in the middle of the winter. But between the fireplace and the aircon we were kept very warm! The garden is absolutely beautiful with mountains in the background and is huge! Diana is the perfect host – set up the fire just in time for our arrival; left some port wine for us & some delicious fresh eggs from her own hens! It was heaven & we will sure be back for our next trip to Mudgee!
