07 Jun Living in Mudgee: What It’s Like
Having grown up in the country, then doing the obligatory ten years in the city, moving back seemed only natural. As they say, you can take the girl out of the country but not the country out of the girl.
I get asked a lot what it’s like living in Mudgee. Well, to me it has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I am once again surrounded by the beauty of nature spread in wide open spaces, not to mention vineyards. I am partial to a good glass of wine!
Why I Love Living in Mudgee
I fell in love with Mudgee the first time I visited. The fresh air, farm-to-plate food philosophy, and a huge variety of wines! We have over 40 cellar doors to choose from and several wonderful winery restaurants. I love being able to go where the wine is produced, grab a bottle of wine on my way to a friend’s house. Bottle shops not required, although we have a couple of good local options now in town.
There are lots of walking tracks, great sporting facilities, and a very healthy outdoor living culture. Our council is very progressive and always looking to improve venues and ensure there is plenty to do for all ages.
And it’s not just sports-focused either. There are many musical opportunities as well as the arts. People often associate living in the country with being disadvantaged. I don’t feel that at all – there is everything here you need minus the crazy traffic. A little fact about Mudgee: we have no traffic lights!
We have great schools in here too, so you’ll have several options for your children’s education. There are public and Catholic schools that offer a myriad of co-curricular activities so your little ones will have the training they need not only academically but socially, physically, and spiritually.
Whilst real estate is not cheap, it certainly is when compared to major cities. You can buy a new 4 bedroom house in town for under $600,000 or if you’d like a bit of acreage then a good guide would be $500,000 to $1,300,000. This obviously depends on proximity to town and number of acres.
A big determining factor when considering living in Mudgee is of course jobs. There are many jobs ranging from mining, trades, administration, accountancy, pharmacists, to child care. Also, with hospitality so prominent in the region, there are always jobs on offer in that field.
Mudgee, it really is all they say. Come and see what all the fuss is about!
